What's UP, Korea?) 홍반장(Hongbanjang), a good restaurant near ST!

Hello ST People~

Korea is getting cold again!

This week is very important for Korea and Koreans because Pyeongchang Olympic 2018 will open on Feb 9th, this Fri, and takes its place to Feb 25th! Seoul, the capital of Korea, once hosted Summer Olympic in 1988 which was exactly 30 years ago and it was huge success! (Koreans say Korea started to become very developed from the moment of 1988.

We are preparing real hard for another success so hope many people would visit to beautiful Korea this time! But! Pyeongchang, where Olympic is held, is one of the super cold areas in Korea which is now up to -20 so you should be careful with your clothing!
For Pyeongchang Olympic, I'll be posting someday this week!

In winter season, there are some must-menus Koreans love to eat and I would like to introduce which is one of the most popular menu just near by ST Plastic Surgery!

The name of the restaurant is (quite long)

홍반장 신의주 찹쌀순대&감자탕

which is basically the name of the place first and the following name of the two menus they are most famous about. What you need to remember is that the name of the restaurant is '홍반장(Hongbanjang)'!
Hong is one of the last names in Korea and Banjang is like captain.
So, it is simply Captain Hong!

What is 감자탕(Gamja-tang/Pork Back-bone Stew) ?
A thick soup made of pork backbones, potato, green cabbage leaves(ugeoji), crushed perilla seeds, perilla leaves, spring onions and garlic. A spicy dish with a deep and robust flavor.

For your information, Gamja in Korean actually refers to potato so many Koreans misunderstand the name of this food came from potato, but actually Gamja in this food's name also refers to one of the parts of pork and came from using the part of pork.

Therea are some tables and chairs on the left (where you cannot see from the photo) and most of them are seating on the floor surface style. (which I as Korean cannot even find easy to seat! The style has been changing these days but still can be found a lot in Korea)

You can also check pictured menus at the counter which are sold the most~

If you take a look at the menu on the right side, the two dishes on the very top, they are named '뼈해장국(ppyeo haejangguk)'.

Many restaurants use
감자탕(gamja-tang/Pork
Back-bone Stew)
=
뼈해장국(ppyeo haejangguk/Pork Rib Hangover Soup)

, so don't get confused but just order 뼈해장국 there!

My recommendations are!
1) 뼈해장국(ppyeo haejangguk/Pork Rib Hangover Soup): 7,000KRW (8,000KRW for large size)

2) 순대국밥(sundae gukbap/Korean Sausage and Rice Soup)
6,500KRW (7,500KRW for large size)

*** No need to order big size unless you are really big eater~***

So, when you order, you are served with some basic side dishes~
1) The one on the top: dried seasoned radish (bit saulty but not hot)
2) The one on the left bottom: cucumber chili seasoned with soybean sauce (cucumber chili in Korea is not hot at all and different from other chilis you can thikc of. But those regular or smaller sized chilis are hot as you could imagin, so be careful!)
3) The one on the right bottom: kkakdugi, sliced radish kimchi (their kkakdugi is more like pickle that the taste is not too strong and is easy to go with main dishes~)

If you need more? Just ask the employees for more~! (NO additional charge!)

Almost every regular restaurants in Korea do not have spoon holder prepared, but we rather use a piece of napkin infront of a person and put spoon and chopsticks on it. No one is in charge of doing it but mostly younger people do it for others as a manner~

Here we have 뼈해장국(ppyeo haejangguk) !!!
The powder on the top is perilla powder mixed with black pepper~ You can mix them with the soup before eating!

The way how I eat this food is to separate the meat from the bone, put the meat back into the soup and the rice, then eat all together~ Gamja is pork bone area so you would need some work done to eat well hehe~

Some people just eat the meat and soup separately but I do the way above so that I can keep the soup warm till I finish the dish!

Once you finished seperating meat from the bone? Now you are ready to dig in!

My co-worker ordered another one of my recommendation, 순대국밥(sundae gukbap).
The soup looks much more clear (but they are both not hot! Don't worry!) and also has some vegetables, powders and Sundae inside~

Ummmm~~ next time I visit there, I will try this!
Since I always ordered 뼈해장국(ppyeo haejangguk)!

Or you can also order Sundae as separately if you would like to try without in soup but as it is! It is such a nicely roasted flavor +_+!!!

If you will visit to ST and want to know how to get there?
Ask me! It is just less than 10mins from ST Plastic surgery by walk!
