What's UP, Korea?) Korean Money, 'Won' (from 10won to 10,000won!)

How much do you know about Korean money?

Let's find out how Korean money is different!
(for easy understanding, I add the pronounciation and the value in USD as well!)

Coins
(ST Plastic Surgery Clinic, Korea)
십원 (sip-won/ ten won/ 1cent)
Sip-won has the feature of Dabo-tap, also known as pagoda of many treasures, on the back of the coin that is located in the temple of Bulguksa in Gyeongju, South Korea which is currently designated as National Treasure no. 20.

It is not much used recently that is even hardly used for vending machine. You might use it when paying for a plastic bag at the convenience store since a customer needs to pay 20 won to buy a plastic bag.

오십원 (o-sip-won/ fifty won/ 5cents)

O-sip-won has the feature of stalk of rice in the back of the coin and is the same size of 십원. It is also not much used daily however you could use it for vending machine~ (I sometimes use it when having a cup of small coffee from the vending machine on my way work.)

백원 (baek-won/ one hundred won/ 10cents)
Baek-won has the feature of Yi Sun-sin(이순신) in the back of the coin, a Korean naval commander famed for his victories against the Japanese navy during the Imjin war in the Joseon Dynasty, who became an exemplar of conduct to both the Koreans and Japanese.

This coin is bigger than sip-won and o-sip-won quite usable for daily life however you can hardly find things to buy with only this coins since the prices in Korea are not that cheap anymore. (You could probably buy 1 candy or little snack with few of this)

오백원 (o-baek-won/ five hundred one/ 50cents)
O-baek-won has the red crowned crane feature in the back of the coin and is biggest sized coin among others. It is quite usable for simple use of daily life such as buying small stuffs at the convenience store or vending machines.

Banknotes

천원 (cheon-won/ 1,000won/ 1dollar)
Cheon-won has the feature of Yi-Hwang on the front, one of the two most prominent Korean Confucian scholars of the Joseon Dynasty as well as Sungkyunkwan next to him, which was the foremost educational institution in Korea during the late Goryeo and Joseon Dynasties. In the back, there is painting of Dosan Seowon "Gyesangjeonggeodo" painted by Jeong Seon.
It is quite usable for daily life such as paying for fare for transportation (bus, taxi or etc.) as well as buying something simple in market or convenience store.

오천원 (o-cheon-won/ 5,000won/ 5dollars)
O-cheon-won has the feature of Yi I on the front, one of the two most prominent Korean Confucian scholars of the Joseon Dynasty as well as Ojukheon in Gangneung, black bamboo. In the back, there is painting of a watermelon and cockscombs, "Insects and Plants", which was painted by Yi I's mother Shin Saimdang.

I personally like this banknote (don't know why hehe, but I always like the color of it the most among others) and pretty much usable for daily life.

만원 (man-won/ 10,000won/ 10dollars)
Man-won means a lot to me because it has the feature of Sejong the Great, the fourth king of Joseon-dynasty Korea and the one who created the Kroean alphabet Hangul. (Everything in Korea could have its meaning because he made Hangul, amazing king..) In the back, there is Globe of Honcheonsigye, Cheonsang Yeolcha Bunyajido C14 star map and reflecting telescope at Bohyeonsan Observatory in the background.

This is the bank note many foreign patients and visitors would exhange with when they are traveling to Korea, and used a lot for daily life.

오만원 (o-man-won/ 50,000won/ 50dollars)
O-man-won has the feature of Shin-saimdang, a Korean artist, writer, calligraphist, and poet. She was the mother of the Korean Confusion scholar Yi I who is the model of O-cheon-won. She is often held up as a model of wise mother that it was bit controversial about being the first female model of Korean money since she is representative model of wife and mother unlike the male models in other banknotes who is known for great achievements.

This was the newest issued in June 23rd, 2009, ever since after when man-won was issued in 1973. Government and the bank of Korea stated that national income had been increased 110 times as well as price went up more than 10 times.

If you have a chance to visit to Seoul, Korea, I recommend to visit to
Bank of Korea located in Jung-gu area (near the visiting spots such as Myeongdong, the first Shinsegae Deparment Store, Namdaemun, or etc.) It has the bank of Korean money museum where you can view the total history of it and not only international visitors but also local people come to visit a lot.
