What's UP, Korea?) What do you know about taxis in Korea?

Hello~ ST people~

Omg, it is getting colder and colder here in Seoul, Korea that the average of lowest temperature next week is -6, -8!
(ST Plastic Surgery Clinic, Korea)
It is -4 today but the weather cast said sensory temperature is even lower than that! I recently have been assisting patients from Indonesia and ask them to specially warm themselves when going outside. (They even went to Nami island yesterday where is even colder than Seoul, wow..)

When the weather is good, I recommend our patients to walk around and do sightseeing or shopping as minor exercise, however, who could do that things in this colder weather? We usually say winter is perfect season for plastic surgery, but never underestimate your condition after the surgery since you are still in the middle of recovery~

So today, we are going to talk about one of the main transportations in Korea, TAXI!
It is most easily used especially for foreigners who are new to Korea, since you may need some practice to try public transportations like bus or subway. (I do not recommend bus to international people since the drivers drive it quite aggressive to meet tight schedule.)

So! How to use taxis in Korea? Are there some kinds of taxi? What about the fare?
For your questions, let's find out how they are!

(The taxis introduced here are only for Seoul area~ there are more colors in other areas)

1. There are two main colors of taxis: Orange and Grey
(ST Plastic Surgery Clinic, Korea)
1) Classification: Regular taxi
2) Basic fare: 3,000 won (up to 2 kilometer)
3) Fare after: 100 won per 142 meter (100 won per 35 seconds)
4) Later hour premium: 20% up charged during 00:00AM~04:00AM
5) Out of business area premium: 20% up charged when getting out of Seoul area
* Duplicate premium for later hour and out of business area: 20%+20% up charged
* In case of using toll road requested by the passenger, the passenger pays for it.

This takes the majority numbers of taxis in Seoul that you will see a lot of them! In the main areas such as Incheon Airport, Gangnam, Myeongdong or others, you can seem them waiting in line to take customers.

It runs basically the same as grey one does but only the difference is that orange one belongs to the company while grey one belongs to individual. (it is quite expensive to buy the license and car for individual taxi so drivers mostly start with orange one and buy grey one when they can afford)

I personally prefer taking grey ones better since they seem to be less pressed by money (not all). For orange one, there is the money which taxi drivers have to turn over to the company out of their daily earning, therefore it is harder for the drivers to make enough earning and results them to pick the passengers who would seem to go farther distance. (it is illegal to choose passengers so we even have campaign to get in the car before informing the destination.)

One of the examples for that it is really hard to get taxis around main streets during 11:30PM~1:30AM since every taxis want to take passengers for farther distance and illegally refuse shorter distance passengers even there are bunch of them lining up.

2. Have you seen blue color taxi?
(ST Plastic Surgery Clinic, Korea)
1) Classification: Regular taxi (electronic)
2) Basic fare: 3,000 won (up to 2 kilometer)
3) Fare after: 100 won per 142 meter (100 won per 35 seconds)

4) Later hour premium: 20% up charged during 00:00AM~04:00AM

5) Out of business area premium: 20% up charged when getting out of Seoul area

This is the newest kind of taxis compared to the first two that people at first did not know what this was. The color is just so cute like clear sky or cotton candy (even cuter when you see it real >_<) that did not seem to look like a taxi. The car is bit smaller than regular taxis, runs by electricity, and has absolutely no noise at all! I had used it once with my mom and brother that we all liked it.

One thing this electronic taxi cannot be compared to the first two taxis is that it needs to be charged at electroni vehicle charging station. Since the charging stations are not set a lot even in Seoul area therefore it is limited to get outside of Seoul. If more charging points are settled, I will definitely love to use this one the most.

3. Model taxi? Looking luxurious!
(ST Plastic Surgery Clinic, Korea)
1) Classification: Model, large
2) Basic fare: 5,000 won (up to 3 kilometer)
3) Fare after: 200 won per 164 meter (200 won per 39 seconds)

4) Later hour premium: 20% up charged during 00:00AM~04:00AM

5) Out of business area premium: 20% up charged when getting out of Seoul area
* Duplicate premium for later hour and out of business area: 20%+20% up charged
* In case of using toll road requested by the passenger, the passenger pays for it.

I personally had never used it on my own. It is not super expensive compare to regular taxis however Koreas still find it not easy to try. All model taxis are ran by individuals and the drivers need to meet specific standard to own this title. Only the drivers who drove individual taxis (grey color) for 20 years without any accidents can have this car. Therefore not only the safety is guranteed, but the drivers' attitudes are quite different from regular taxis.

If you are not going very far distance, it is worth trying model taxi for great service.

4. Benz taxi?
(ST Plastic Surgery Clinic, Korea)
1) Classification: Model, large
2) Basic fare: 5,000 won (no basic distance)
3) Fare after: 100 won per 71.4 meter (100 won per 15 seconds)

Kakaotalk is the biggest text messaging service in Korea and Kakao company has been extending its business to different areas related to our lives such as bus, subway, taxi and even bank.
(ST Plastic Surgery Clinic, Korea)
Unlike bus and subway application that is only made for the information purpose, Kakao taxi is for call taxi like Uber from the U.S. Passengers can call the taxi through Kakao taxi application with informing the driver the destination. Kakao taxi divided taxi service into regular taxis (like orange or grey ones) and super premium service using Benz called 'Kakao black'.

It is about twice more expensive than regular taxi and even more than model taxi.
Based on supply and demand, the fare is revised upwards up to 1.2 to 4 times if there are more passengers than the numbers of its availability. In this case, 'peak fare' is informed in red color in the Kakao Taxi application and expected fare for the passenger's destination is also shown.

Kakao black has no taximeter inside of the car and can only be paid through the card that is already registered in the application. If you see white or black Benzs with yellow license plate, they are Kakao taxi!

5. For foreign visitors, International Taxi!
(ST Plastic Surgery Clinic, Korea)
Visit the official website for more information and reservation! http://www.intltaxi.co.kr/

If you are very new to Korea and don't know how to get your hotel from the airport?
Consider to use international taxi which you can make a reservation at the airport!
(you can also make reservation online for its use to go back to the airport~)
Unlike other taxis, International taxis are driven by the drivers who can speak one of the languages you choose, and the rate is also flat depending on where you go.

From Kimpo Airport to downtown in Seoul, the rate varies 55,000 won ~ 75,000 won. (One way) If you choose Luxury or Large Taxi, the rate goes up to 80,000 won ~ 110,000 won.
From Gimpo Airport to Seoul downtown, it is cheaper 20,000 won ~ 38,000 won.

* What are the useful tips when using taxis in Korea? *
1) Prepare the destination in Korean (not English)
- Almost every taxi drivers do not speak foreign languages including English. If possible, prepare your destination in Korean word so that you do not get complicated when explaining where to go.

2) Watch out the taximeter
- Sorry to say, but I've heard of numbers of my patients complaining about ripping off the rate especially when passengers do not seem to speak Korean or very new to Korea.
Watch the taximeter and refer to the fare per seconds above while in taxi!

3) Ask taxi driver for help if your luggages are heavy
- Most of drivers help loading luggages if they look heavey but some do not. Ask for help instead of doing all yourself!

4) Pay by what you want
- It is true that taxi driver prefers to be paid by cash because of credit-card fee but you never have to if you want to pay by card! For your information, you can purchase anything by card over 1,000 won in Korea.

With Korean taxis, enjoy your trip in Seoul~>_<"
